J.W.Baccaro, Three Books in One Volume: Prophecy of the Guardian/The Coming of the Light/Piercing the Darkness

Not darkness, not light, perhaps something in between, and is claimed by the darkness…as theirs. Though being saved by the light, that which is saved must in turn save the world.

Darshun Luthais has never experienced the Nasharin Frenzy—the unbending will to challenge a stronger opponent, no matter the cost. He doesn’t know what he will transform into, has never bonded with an elemental crystal and has never seen any of the unearthly creatures his father talks about. Even though he’s an infant in Nasharin years, his life consists of nothing but constant training, striving to unlock the sleeping power his so-called accursed race is born with.

But all that changes when he is pursued by a Dream Assassin in the dead of night. What he witnesses will forever change his outlook on life, and lead him on a quest seemingly impossible to complete.

Tree of Damnation comes after the trilogy Prophecy of the Guardian, all books authored by J.W. Baccaro.  Read the wonderful guest post from J.W. Baccaro at Willowbeithe with author Q&A.

Banished from the physical planes by her own creation, Valkyrie is preparing to bring destruction upon all the earth’s inhabitants. The self-proclaimed Goddess has been observing all creation throughout millennia, seething with envy as they go about their lives, completely unaware of her suffering. It is through the Tree of Life that she sees all, sending out tendrils of influence to corrupt the naive, and gather energy from the dark deeds Mankind commits. All the while, keeping her eyes set upon one earthling in particular who understands the secrets of the universe.

Kaylis, full servant to the Vampire Mistress Shaleen, and the one who holds the key Valkyrie so desperately seeks, finds himself growing even more insistent on ignoring his warrior instinct. He knows the power inside of him is too terrible to unleash. All he wants is to be of service to the lady he loves. While it is inconceivable to Shaleen at first, in time she will learn what truly binds her to Kaylis is his unconditional love for her and just how wonderful that feels.

Breaking her may be all Valkyrie needs in order to awaken Kaylis’ power and absorb the secrets to his being. Then she can take great satisfaction in annihilating his soul.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is NOT your typical Vampire story…

Sedate

I’m not sure when it happened. Life, some how, got a lot more complicated. My life is not fancy by any means. In fact, doing the tiny life thing should make things more simple. Even so, some how things are more chaotic.

In our lives, we are all finding ways to cope. Everyday we deal with bills, money, no money, hunger, loss, death, Alzheimer’s, Cancer, addiction, politics, religion, families being separated, divorce and so much more. We have questions that no one wants to answer or maybe no one can answer.

For me, books slow me down. As much as I love my kindle and my phone, holding a book really slows me down. I like taking time to take in the art work on the cover. Actually holding the book sends some sort of signal to my brain, this is relaxation time. Picking up the book and setting in to read it is a ritual of sorts. Something takes place and being involved with it brings on an evolved feeling.

When I think of reading time, I think of quiet. My shawl wrap on a chilly day and a tasty snack. Usually it is with tea. These days that cup will probably have hot green tea with honey and milk. Reading enriches and nurtures our minds, no doubt. Reading books does something else for me too. It is a settling, a calming, an easy take on what life has now become. Reading books truly nourishes my soul and my aide to drift away from the madness.

Life being messy isn’t just what is happening in our own personal space. Society is busy and chaotic. Everyone expects that from everyone else too. Suddenly, if you are not doing what society is doing, then automatically, you are wrong. You are not fitting a mold. You are not fitting in. It is mind boggling.

So, we get caught up and running in the wrong direction, it feels. I imagine in my head a great big sign reading ‘wrong way’ and hordes of people going that way, over looking the great big sign. I pick up the sign and start screaming ‘No, don’t go! Don’t do it! Go the other way!’. But when I am screaming, no sound is coming out. I can not find the words. I can not explain or express how I feel or say my opinion. No one is really listening anyway, they are stone cold and determined to keep on their path.

Sometimes, all I want is the quiet and the calm from all the noise. And sometimes picking up a book does that for me.

I can not lie or pretend it is working one hundred percent of the time. It’s not. My mind, like the world, is on fire with distress and concern. I am still going to get loud sometimes and take part in all the noise to resist anything that I do not believe is right for our human race or our planet earth.

By the genre I read, my mood can be discovered. Sometimes the book I’m reading reflects where my mind is. What ever I’m feeling probably has more dictation on what I am going to read than what I even know. And then again, sometimes I make a real effort to pick up a book that might shake my mood or worries.

There is no way to explain the incredible feeling of reading a story that is so breath-taking and magically able to take me away from life. One that allows me to be absorbed into the pages and think of absolutely nothing else until the end. And then, when the last page is read, there is a sinking, sick feeling of dread. The missing of those characters, the sorrow of no more to read, The loss and empty feeling because the book is over.

That is the feeling I crave.

Books are my high.

I have a need for books.

Books are my escape.

Finding the right book is absolute magic.

Crazy Cat Lady

Right from the start the creeps come out heavy and then quickly set into gore.

The Crazy Cat Lady has a witty and entertaining feel to it, even through the chilling moments.

A few friends decide to check out the town’s very old house, and to hear them tell it, where the crazy cat lady once lived. Convinced the house is no longer inhabited or even habitable, they go on about their explorations. Little do they know the horror that waits for them.

The author takes us back to the time of Davina Honeycutt, a midwife familiar with the use of herbs and natural remedies. While she is doing what she knows best something goes wrong and she is blamed. The town people of her time mistake her for evil. They form a “Frankenstein” style posse to get rid of the old house where she lives and all the evil that resides with it.

The story continues on to discover a blood connection with Davina. Through terror, loss and more investigation, the true evil becomes obvious. How to get rid of it becomes the question.

The Crazy Cat Lady had me with the title and cover, being a cat lover myself. It looks frightening and it is. I guess I can…. let the cat out of the bag…. that it’s not so far-fetched to think of dying alone and being eaten by my cats.

And, that’s not even a spoiler! It’s more of a warning how creepy and horrific it gets.

Kitty de’ Chatou (Honeycutt) and yes the same as in the book, points to real life connections in her fiction tale making it even more interesting. There are photos of mentioned places in the story including a photo of the real house where “the crazy cat lady” lived.

There are no sexual situations but the language and gore make this a mature read.

I enjoyed reading this chilling novella.

A horrifying look into what happens when nature is misunderstood and an old crone that harmed no one is now out for revenge.

BOOK  DESCRIPTION/SYNOPSIS:

In 1962 they thought she was dead, all they had to do was burn the old house down with her and those damnable cats in it and everything would be normal again. No more odd antics from the Crazy Cat Lady no more death. But what they didn’t realize is there was much more to her relationship with her beloved cats than met the eye. Love, trust, and the bonds of a mother to her children all played a part to the insanity the town people thought raged within the crone’s mind.

It’s now 2018 and the stories have not ceased. Instead it seems the legend of the ‘Crazy Cat Lady’ have grown more horrifying than ever before prompting the local children to take a visit. Most have only come within a few feet of the old half burned house. They would stand, staring at the place, watching the creepy cats mill about the area, climbing along porch railings meowing plaintively. But three high school boys decide to take it a bit further one night which begins a horrifying look into what happens when nature is misunderstood and an old crone that harmed no one is now out for revenge.

Age Warfare by Juan Carlos Cantú

Age Warfare by Juan Carlos Cantú

Enthralling Dystopian Novel

Thrilling. Intriguing. Captivating.

Age Warfare could be considered one of the most frightening books I’ve read. It is fiction yes, but drawing out real possibilities for the future (or the lack of one) of our human race. The message may be bleak, just the same it could serve as a warning, and one that should be heard by all.

I would not call this book a light read. The subject matter is very deep and serious. Although a fiction novel, Age Warfare is a textual of what the world may be like in forty years or less. Juan Carlos Cantú deals with the breakdown of our ecosystem, the world’s financial stability, and a social collapse.

The characters are introduced, showing age and generation, along with the concerns of each group. The only thing the characters have in common is the situation of the world in which they reside together. A severe division exists between generations, and in a sense creating a segregation based on terms entirely different from race, creed, and religion.

From first reading the description for Age Warfare, I knew this was a must read. While the subject matter is dark and disheartening, the author has developed a wonderful novel with great detail. Foot notes are provided and the author ingeniously writes a compelling theory with creative language and labeling.

I loved this book. I hate the thought this might be true.

AGE WARFARE

Book Description Product Marketing

A social movement pushing for change brews in the United States. The crushing difference between the appalling conditions the younger generation (called limiters) have to endure and the opulent lifestyles of the older folks (called precollapsers) is increasingly unsustainable. The year is 2053, and the compulsive use of technology has molded human interaction, behavior, and learning capabilities, degrading them to a level which decades earlier would have been thought of as pathological. The world is mired in ecological crisis, as the governments around the world intrusively impose regulations aimed at moderating energy consumption growth in an increasingly strained planet.

This is the world in which Ethan Maxwell is born: a world of harsh conditions; one that apparently no other youth around him seems to have a problem with. His story is one of transformation, one of survival –and one of hope. Accompany Ethan in the journey that takes him from an inconspicuous high school in Boston, Massachusetts, to the zenith of a worldwide social movement that threatens to rock the very structures that keep his generation oppressed and neglected. Age Warfare is the tale of a not-so-foreign future that paints the picture of what could happen if we continue in the current path, but also one that leaves us with the hope of knowing that there is always another opportunity to start anew.

Three Hardcovers Three Dollars

These books are hard covers and I found them on the cheap. I couldn’t believe it and couldn’t resist them. The only thing that disappoints me is The Hunt is a series I’ve not read. I’ve been in a mood lately and reading a lot of stuff similar to 1984. These are going to do just fine. The first two, J and The Hunt are going to be twisted dark dystopia fantasy types. Eleanor sounds really interesting and has been compared to A Wrinkle in Time. We will see.

J: A Novel
by Howard Jacobson

Man Booker Prize–winner Howard Jacobson’s brilliant and profound new novel, J, “invites comparison with George Orwell’s 1984 and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World” (Sunday Times, London). Set in a world where collective memory has vanished and the past is a dangerous country, not to be talked about or visited, J is a boldly inventive love story, both tender and terrifying.

Kevern Cohen doesn’t know why his father always drew two fingers across his lips when he said a word starting with a J. It wasn’t then, and isn’t now, the time or place to be asking questions. When the extravagantly beautiful Ailinn Solomons arrives in his village by a sea that laps no other shore, Kevern is instantly drawn to her. Although mistrustful by nature, the two become linked as if they were meant for each other. Together, they form a refuge from the commonplace brutality that is the legacy of a historic catastrophe shrouded in suspicion, denial, and apology, simply referred to as WHAT HAPPENED, IF IT HAPPENED. To Ailinn’s guardian, Esme Nussbaum, Ailinn and Kevern are fragile shoots of hopefulness. As this unusual pair’s actions draw them into ever-increasing danger, Esme is determined to keep them together—whatever the cost.

In this stunning, evocative, and terribly heartbreaking work, where one couple’s love affair could have shattering consequences for the human race, Howard Jacobson gathers his prodigious gifts for the crowning achievement of a remarkable career.

The Hunted (The Enemy book 6)
by Charlie Higson

The sickness struck everyone sixteen and older. First it twisted their minds; next it ravaged their bodies. Now the sickos roam the streets, crazed and hungry for young flesh.

Ella’s friends had told her that the country would be safer than the city. They were wrong. Now they’re dead and Ella’s all alone–alone, that is, except for her silent rescuer, Scarface. But she doesn’t even know if he’s a kid or a grown-up.

Back in London, Ed is determined to find Ella and keep his promise to Small Sam that he will reunite sister and brother. But getting out of town has never been more dangerous. It seems that every sicko in the country is coming from all directions, almost as if they’re being summoned to the capital. Will anything be able to stop the invading horde?

Eleanor
by Jason Gurley

When a terrible accident claims the life of Eleanor’s twin, her family is left in tatters, and her reality begins to unravel, dropping her in and out of unfamiliar worlds. When she returns to her own time and place, hours and days have flown by without her. One fateful day, Eleanor leaps from a cliff…and vanishes. In a strange in-between place, she meets a mysterious stranger who understands the weight of her family history: Eleanor’s twin wasn’t the only tragic loss. And unless Eleanor can master her strange new abilities, she may not be the last.

Sorrowed Souls

Sorrowed Souls
by
Brenda Youngerman

The threads of fate beautifully weave; The beholder often times refuses to see.

Sorrowed Souls is filled with a multitude of different types of characters. I guess that is the case for most books already. What stands out and what gave the story its depth, I could not see the connection or relationship of those characters right away. Each character had a stand alone story of their own. And, their troubles.

It is a tapestry of lives, and each of them hold key factors that answered the “why?” for me as I was reading. Looking in from my point of view, piece by piece, the puzzle was put together, connecting the characters and their issues. It was a slow but rich process.

“Gus, ever since I’ve known you, the world has been at your beck and call, and you have felt like you were alone. You put yourself on a fringe when you could’ve stepped right into the middle at any point. When the day comes that you are finally ready to jump in, then you’ll be able to move forward and get out of the rut and the ‘curse’ you feel that you’re under. It’s time to stop blaming everyone around you and start taking a personal inventory to determine what it is you need to be a better Augustus Winston Hill.”

Gus was one of my favorite characters throughout. He had a leading type of soul even as a young child. While his disadvantages may have actually given him a sort of strength, he did not see it. He seemed to relish in his weaknesses to the point he was unable to ever really find peace. I simply adored this character. He reminds me of myself and others that I know in my life. He seemed to have been born into a self hell and lived his entire life battling that. For that reason, he simply did not learn, or know how, to ‘feel’ a secure happy life.

And then there are Gus’s parents. The privileged lives lived. Wow, how often have I said “If I were a millionaire”? For a lot of the story, money was never the issue or problem. The lack of money was not exactly why people were unhappy or why there was self destruction. The author most likely wrote it that way to prove, you can have the money and still have the problems. It is something deeper.

What ever it is that makes us break inside seemed to flow like water in these pages and opened my eyes to life and just how fragile it really is.

How it made me feel.

Sorrowed Souls’ has left a lasting impression on me. I spent quite a bit of the time crying. It was horrific what the characters had to endure and how their lives were changed by cruel acts. Not once in the story did I ever feel that the characters were over reacting to their life happenings. I felt compassion that their life choices, and their pain was pretty much justified. However, sometimes I witnessed them missing their mark and they could have without a doubt avoided some or all of the pain they seemed to willingly absorb.

I cry for these people as if they are real to me, because they are real. Every day real people are suffering the way these characters suffered. The homeless are highlighted in this book with a real look at how one living on the street might have gotten there, and how they might survive. Often times in this life, it takes grand moments of fate to snap us back and to get us on track.

This is not a fantasy type story with hobbits, vampires, dragons or werewolves. This is fiction, tho close to non-fiction, with breathing, bleeding human beings.

Synopsis (book description)

The eyes are said to be the window to the soul. Have you ever looked at someone whose eyes have no light? Follow the journey out of the darkness. In the space of a moment, Bryan Tines thought he had lost everything that was important to him. Waking up in a strange place with no recollection of where he came from, or who he was; lost, hungry and dirty, his life would have been over if not for the kindness of the invisible layer of society. Gus Hill was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and alcohol coursing through his veins. Living on the outside looking in, Gus goes down a path of self-destruction and finds that the harsh words of a true friend enable him to help himself and others who feel their lives have no meaning. Through this path, Gus finds what is really important. Amy Pickens was born into a working class family-a planned and difficult birth-her mother never let her forget how much of a burden Amy’s life was to her. She became the unwanted child. Struggling with confidence issues, she accidentally finds happiness, which in one fleeting moment, appears to go awry. Brenda Youngerman writes a tale of stunning clarity and insight into the lives of average people. Beautifully written, her novel explores the human condition, the ways in which our past torture and free us, and the risks we’re willing to take to realize the illusive dream of happiness. This is Brenda Youngerman’s fourth novel and she is currently writing her fifth. She lives in Southern California.

About the Author

Brenda Youngerman (1960 – ) Was raised in Southern California and has been writing since she was a child. Her first novel, Private Scars, was published in 2006 and takes an insiders view of domestic abuse and allows the reader a vantage point on how a victim is isolated and alienated from everything they know and love. Private Scars won both the editors choice and publishers choice awards. Since the release of Private Scars Youngerman has released a novel a year bringing up what she calls, “Fiction With a Purpose,” books that take on social issues and very real world problems. She hopes that a reader puts down one of her books and asks the question, “Was that real?”

If one person is helped by reading a Youngerman novel and realizes that they are not alone in their predicament, she has achieved success in her eyes.
